HI everybody,

my name is Adriano, I´m from Italy and I plan to visit Norway on the coming July. We will stay at the Lofoten, in A.

We would like to go hiking as much as possible, but only daily walks. I'm interested in the Nesland-Nusfjord trip, but I would like to know, according to the description, how could you come back to the starting point in Nesland without walking back the same way. I mean, it takes 4 hours app. to walkt fron Nesland to Nusfjord, then I suppose you visit a bit the small village, beetwen 1-2 hours, then if you walk back the same way, it takes again ca. 4 hours... this is 10-12 hours trip. You need to rest sometimes, takes photos etc... Not just a small walk. Did anybody already make it? How? Thanks alot in advance.

Hello Adriaono and welcome to the hikers forum :D

The trip from Nesland to Nusfjord is one of the easy walks of the Lofoten (family friendly), even if you do both ways the same day. I do not think that you will spend 10hours on the trip, even if you include visits, stops, pictures, etc. A good hiker can do Nesland-Nusfjord in approx. 2h (in the description of the trip in the "Day walks", we mention 4 hours walking, but in reality in includes stops, eating something on the way, and maybe a small siesta). Nusfjord is nice, but quite small, so you would probably spend max 1,5hours if you decide to have a small lunch or coffee over there. And then again count 2 hours back to Nesland. So I would say that this is at most a 6 hours day.

If you think that going back the same way is a little bit boring, there is a possibility to go back to Nesland through an other way (on the top of the mountains).

Here is how you can do it (this is for experienced hikers, and you will need a map, the Vest-Lofoten kart 1/50 000):

- Once in Nusfjord you can instead of following the normal shore-route, go up on Tonsasheia a mountain above Nusfjord village (you will find the description of this walk in the “day walks” section of the site : http://rando-lofoten.net/index.php/en/tonsasheia-en).

- Once you are on the top of Tonsasheia (or on the plateau beneath the submit) go down following the ridge (direction full south) to the point 683 of the map.

- Then you will walk down to the pass between Trollhamran and the valley of Vassdalen.

- Once you are on the pass go down (there is no real path) to the Vassdalsvatnet on the est cost side and then follow the small path that will take you down to the village of Nesland.

This way will take you 3,5 or 4 hours (pure walking) and there is not a good marked route, especially in the last part of the walk, but the views are very nice.

Have a nice trip in the Lofoten,

Magdalena.

Dear Magdalena,

thanks alot for the tips. I was checking already the "Tønsåsheia" tour as possible way back. If you confirm me that the coast path is not so long as in the description, timewise, this could be a very interesting day hiking. Would it also be suggested to walk the way round, so starting from Nesland, up the Tønsåsheia, down to Nusfjord and then back along the coast to Nesland?

Thanks again.

Adriano

Hello again,

Yes it is possible to do it as you say:

From Nesland up to Tonsasheia and then down to Nusfjord, and go back to Nesland along the coast. I think it would be a good idea to do it this way, starting with the difficult part and then finishing with something easier to rest your legs ;)

Magdalena
