Hi all,

First let me comment at what an amazing website this is -- helpful in so many ways as I plan my trip all the way from here in Seattle in the USA. I'll be in the Lofoten Islands at the end of August and am hoping to go on some easy/moderate hikes for photography opportunities. I read here that hiking alone in the islands is not recommended, though I don't plan on doing any really difficult hikes or camping. Should I be OK with my rental car and handheld GPS? Also, any recommendations on hikes that you would recommend for someone that is alone?

Thanks so much,

Bryden

Hello !

Thank you for the nice compliment about the website! :D

As in any mountain, it is always safer to be more than one when you hike, but you can of course walk alone in the Lofoten Islands.

Be sure your mobile phone has enough batteries (the coverage is quite good), and if you have a gps, it can be very useful (in the case you have to indicate your position to a rescue team).

On some of the hikes you will meet many hikers (like Munkan, Kvalvika), and in that case, there is no danger to walk alone, you will get help if something goes wrong.

A road, a house, or a farm is never very far away when you walk in the Lofoten, so you should not be too worried about this.

These are some easy or medium hikes where you will probably meet some people, and the terrain is not difficult:

Kvalvika

Nesland-Nusfjord

Kartstaven

Hoven

Ballstadheia

Breitinden

Offeroyskammen

Guratinden

Napp-Vikten

Justadtinden....

You can find the detailed description of these walks in the "Day walk" section.

Hi Bryden!

Hope all goes good for you?

I have read your message and I wanna just let you known that I am going to Lofoten (A, Moskenes,...) in the end of august too... (Arriving in BodØ the 25th, and take the ferry the 26 for Moskenes)...

I travel alone, I have 29 years old, and the north of Norway is the first time for me)///

Maybe we can meet soon then!?

Cheers,

Nathan (from Belgium)

Hi there fellow travellers,

I saw your post and heading the Lofoten Islands at the end of August (22 August I will take the ferry from Bodo), also hoping to take nice photographs around there because I'm photographer too.

If you want, we can get in contact and make a part of the trail together!! :D

Cheers,

Jose

Hi Nathan and Jose,

Perhaps our schedules could match -- I'll be spending the week of August 25th on the islands. Please feel free to email me at brydenmcgrath (at) gmail (dot) com and perhaps we could find the time to meet up.

And magdalena -- thank you so much for the advice, it's much appreciated!
