I'm Bear and my wife is Rue. We are from Australia and had planned a bicycle tour of the Lofotens starting next month July 12th for 6 weeks. We have spent the last year planning this trip and organizing our gear. I have sustained an overuse injury to my pelvic region that looks like it will stop me from riding my bike for some time. We are devastated and believed our trip was not going to happen and all our prepaid expenses would be lost, However we thought we might salvage the trip and do as much as we can by foot hiking. My injury does not seemed to be bothered by walking and hiking just no kicking, running, jumping, or cycling. So we have taken what gear is appropriate from our supplies and started hiking locally to see how my pelvis holds up. So far so good. We are roughly 5 weeks out from leaving. We fly in and out of Tromso so need to start and finish there. We are very experienced campers, and cyclists but not so with hiking. This will be a trial for the both of us in our late 50's. We are confused by the ferry schedules and wondering if there is regular ferry service from Tromso south? I see Tromso to Senja but I am confused on the Hurtigruten's site which looks like a cruise liner not a ferry. We would not be looking at luxury cruises or hotels but looking for transportation from Tromso and to Tromso at the end of our holiday. I read on another forum that there might be a ferry service to and from Svolvær to Tromso. Is this the case? Any suggestions would be appreciated as we are trying to salvage our holiday.

Hi,

As far as I know there is only the "Hurtigruten" which can take you from Tromso to the Lofoten by sea. It is not a ferry it look more like a cruise boat although some people still use it to go for one place to an other of the Norwegian cost. Still it is quite expansive and I will advise you to take the bus instead, it will be both quicker and cheaper. You can find all the bus connection on that site.

It is also important to know that most of the hikes on the Lofoten Islands are quite difficult, so if you are not use to walk in a mountainous terrain you should be particularly careful before engaging yourself in a long trek there.

Hope this can help you.
